Modern gas appliances (condensing boilers, wall-mounted gas boilers, combi appliances) play a key role in operation with temperature sensors. One of the most common components among them is the NTC sensor, which helps ensure the safe and efficient operation of the appliance. In this blog post, I will specifically explain how the NTC works as a gas appliance component, what the boiler uses it for, and what typical faults are associated with it.
What is the NTC sensor in a gas appliance?
The NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) is a temperature sensor whose resistance decreases as the temperature rises.
The electronics of the gas appliance monitor this change in resistance and calculate the current temperature from it.
In the boiler, the NTC typically:

It is built into a metal sleeve,

It connects to the electronic panel with two wires.
Where is the NTC sensor located in the boiler?
A gas appliance can have multiple NTCs, depending on the functions it performs:

Forward heating NTC – measures the temperature of the heating water

Return NTC – monitors the temperature of the water returning from the system

Domestic hot water NTC – measures the temperature of the domestic hot water
-
In condensing boilers, flue gas / heat exchanger NTC – for efficiency and protection
These sensors work together to help the boiler accurately control the flame and the operation of the pump.
How does the NTC work in practice?
The NTC is a semiconductor-based resistor.
Operation step by step:

The boiler's control panel provides low voltage to the NTC

The current temperature of the NTC determines its resistance

The panel measures the current / voltage

The control calculates the temperature

Based on this, it regulates:

the gas valve

the burner output
-
the pump
-
the on and off switching

📉 Cold water → high resistance
📈 Hot water → low resistance
Why is the NTC crucial for safety?
The gas appliance does not operate "by feel", but relies on the data from the NTC. If the sensor is faulty:

the boiler can overheat,

heating or hot water does not start,
-
the device shuts down with an error code,
-
in extreme cases, a safety shutdown occurs.
Therefore, the NTC is a protection and regulation element at the same time.
Common NTC faults in gas appliances
In practice, these are the problems that can be encountered:

Broken NTC → the boiler "sees" the system as extremely cold

Short-circuited NTC → the control detects overheating

Deviation in resistance value → inaccurate temperature, fluctuating operation

Contact error, oxidation → intermittent shutdowns
In such cases, the following often appears:

no heating,
-
hot water fluctuates,
-
display shows temperature or sensor error.
Repairable or replaceable?
The NTC cannot be repaired, only replaced.
Its advantage, however, is that:

is an inexpensive component,
-
can be quickly replaced,
-
does not require reprogramming.

The NTC sensor is one of the most important yet least visible components of the gas appliance.
Without it, there is no precise temperature control, no efficient combustion, and no safe operation.
If the boiler behaves strangely, the temperature fluctuates, or an error code appears, the NTC is often the first suspect component.
